Kafka Fragments at Gather NYC

In a personally long-awaited first showing of a multi-year journey of rehearsals, Ariadne Greif and Alex Fortes perform György Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments, based on deliciously pithy excerpts from Kafka’s letters and diaries, at Gather NYC.

GatherNYC is a revolutionary weekly concert experience. Held every Sunday morning in downtown Manhattan, Gather evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service, but the religion here is music, and all are welcome. Guests are served exquisite live classical music by New York’s most celebrated artists, artisanal coffee and pastries, a taste of the spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence. The entire experience lasts one hour. In these unsettling times, GatherNYC provides a place to fortify beauty and peace.

Doors open at 10:30 AM.

[working titles]: Isola | Amanda + James | Alyssa Weinberg

COMPOSED BY ALYSSA WEINBERG
LIBRETTO BY J. MAE BARIZO
DIRECTED BY ASHLEY TATA

ARIADNE GREIF, SOPRANO
MIHO SAEGUSA, VIOLIN
JENNIFER LIU, VIOLIN
GABRIEL CABEZAS, CELLO

ISOLA is a prismatic meditation on time, mental health, and isolation, a collaborative project undertaken by OPERA AMERICA grantees Alyssa Weinberg and J. Mae Barizo. The title is taken from the word ISOLA, at turns meaning isolation, an island, or the archipelago in the Pacific Ocean where Barizo’s parents emigrated from the year before her birth.

Written by hand by Barizo in the Appalachians in 2020, the text hinges on the idea of distorted perception, both internal and external, viewed through the lens of isolation. In the summer of 2020, cut off from collaboration in the previously understood sense of the word, Weinberg’s
process of composing ISOLA included recording her own voice and manipulating samples of her own music. The libretto was pieced together collaboratively, a synaesthetic practice of giving voice and colors to various emotional realms largely associated with mental health and instability. Deep blue for the color of dreams; pink noise for anxiety and the chaotic inner voices that cannot be silenced; toxic green of a depressive fog; and finally, orange light, a shining moment of clarity and resilience.

An evening of short films commissioned and produced for streaming on the Opera Philadelphia Channel in 2021, making their theatrical debuts in Festival O22.

Blessed, composer Courtney Bryan’s multi-layered exploration of darkness and light, hope and love, created as a response to the milestone events of 2020, in collaboration with filmmaker Tiona Nekkia McClodden, soprano Janinah Burnett, vocalist Damian Norfleet, and sound designer Rob Kaplowitz. (22:02)

We Need to Talk, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and director Maureen Towey create an environment filled with tension and energy in this short film based on a poem by Anne Carson. Soprano Ariadne Greif stars as a young woman in conversation with herself, reminiscent of our isolated days of quarantine: days of frustration, joy, and grief.(10:44)

TakTakShoo, composer Rene Orth’s fusion of opera and K-pop, marimba, electronics, and dance, that creates an eclectic sound and movement world. With a libretto by playwright Kanika Ambrose, the film stars mezzo-soprano Kristen Choi as an energizing life force inviting people to come into the world anew, and is directed by Emmy Award-nominated director and choreographer Jeffrey L. Listen to an operatic evening,

as the sun sets into the water…

An exciting evening in three parts. Opening the evening for us is So&So’s string quartet playing famous string quartets, building our appetite for the main meal — Opera!

In the second, and main part of the evening, we will hear some of the most beloved arias and intermezzi in opera, as well as some other symphonic desserts. Featuring young New York City talent, and our symphony orchestra.

Wrapping up the evening, we have one of the best salsa bands in the city to send us into the night.

*In case of rain, the performance will be canceled. Ticket buyers will have an option to get a refund, or use the tickets for any future So&So or Fort Greene Chamber Music Society production.

Featuring:
