Floating Tower | Uta Bekaia at Turn Park

Turn Park presents Inhabitants of Childhood, a collaboration between the celebrated Georgian-American visual artist Uta Bekaia and composer Mátti Kovler’s musical theatric collective Floating Tower. Join us for a special premier performance to inaugurate the exhibition. Revisit the mysteries of childhood as TurnPark is transformed into a canvas weaving music with wearable sculptures, sewing and embroidering craft.

More Info:

Do you remember being a kid and fantasizing about all kinds of magical forest creatures?

Uta Bekaia, the NYC based Georgian artist, does just that in his new installation “Inhabitants of Childhood.” The forest was Bekaia’s favorite childhood playground teasing his creative imagination. The installation the artist brought to life is based on his childhood fantasies— his sculptures are half animals, half invented creatures.

As you think of Bekaia and see his art, the word “experiment” comes to mind. Bekaia is a multimedia artist—in his work he uses various kinds of media. He combines performance with wearable sculptures. He mixes video with sewing and embroidering craft. His art shows are always colorful, avant-garde and outrageous.

“Inhabitants of Childhood” will take place at TurnPark from July 1st 2018 to October 31, 2018. Don’t miss a chance to connect to your inner child through the prism of Bekaia’s imagination.

Suggested price $15

Mahler Symphony No. 4 with the Northwest Sinfonietta

Mozart meets Mahler (Seattle, Tacoma, Puyallup)

Three performances, July 8, 9, 10.

Artistic Partner Eric Jacobsen returns to the Sinfonietta, pairing two symphonies which showcase the Germanic musical language.  Mozart's Symphony No. 29 is one of the most popular of his earlier works, exemplifying his mastery of form and musical language.  It was called "a landmark... [in] its combination of an intimate, chamber music style with a still fiery and impulsive manner" by musicologist Stanley Sadie.

The second half features a Northwest premier arrangement of the Fourth Symphony of Gustav Mahler.  While Mahler's works are known to be grand- requiring dozens of musicians- the fourth is by far his most intimate and 'Mozart-like' in character.  This arrangement for 26 musicians preserves the complex writing while creating a new, intimate experience closer to the traditional chamber orchestra of Mozart's era.

Eric Jacobsen, conductor

Program*:

MOZART                Symphony No. 29 in A major, K. 201 [1774]

MAHLER               Symphony No. 4 in G major [1900]

(chamber orchestra arrangement, Yoon Jae Lee)

SIX. TWENTY. OUTRAGEOUS.
Three Gertrude Stein Plays in the Shape of an Opera

When an oddball couple, their sassy housekeeper, a sewing machine, and a deranged radio all start singing, Stein’s playful language is transformed into the ecstatic and uncannily beautiful new opera from composer Daniel Thomas Davis, librettist Adam Frank, and director-designer Doug Fitch. From a shopping expedition that turns into an erotic adventure to a presidential election party that goes prophetically and horribly wrong, Stein’s genius for upending convention is made startlingly relevant to our own cultural and political moment. This world premiere features an all-star lineup including vocalists Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek (Anonymous 4), Ariadne Greif, and Andrew Fuchs, joined by the Momenta Quartet and musical director David Bloom
